Moody in static cling form (Photo: The Anne Bonny)

When Moody opened The Anne Bonny three-and-a-half years ago at its former location on Olive Way, he says he sought a change from his previous day job working in a warehouse. “I just didn’t want to have a regular job,” Moody said, “and I had always loved stores like this.” He had envisioned opening a store like The Anne Bonny sometime much further down the road as a retirement venture, but the opportunity emerged, and within four months the store was open for business.

“Everything in the store on day one I had acquired over the four-month period before,” Moody said. Moody accumulated many of the store’s quirky wares – which includes everything from furniture, to clothing, historic photographs, and an enormous wooden cross – from estate sales, and he recalled a drive from Austin, Texas, to Seattle as being particularly fruitful.

A year-and-a-half ago, Moody moved The Anne Bonny to its location at Summit Ave. and Mercer St., where rent cost a quarter of what it did at the Olive Way location. However, the reduced rent did not necessarily make paying the bills any easier.

“I don’t know what I make per hour,” Moody said, “but I know it’s not very much money. I could work in a bar two days a week and earn what I’m making six days a week here.”

Making small, independent businesses survive in Capitol Hill has been a struggle for a variety of reasons, as we have seen in recent weeks with the announced closures of Broadway News and Pho 900. Moody feels that part of the challenge has been getting customers to shop regularly at small businesses like his. “Talking about supporting small business does not actually support them,” he said. “What’s important to small businesses is people patronizing them.”

“It’s a very small segment of the population that will look into a small business before they go to an Ikea,” he said.

Moody’s short-term plan is to focus on earning more money, however that may be. He has performed for years with local music acts Murder City Devils and Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death, and he suggested perhaps focusing more on his music or art. “[Managing The Anne Bonny] has been good,” said Moody. “I’m proud of what I’ve done, and I’m looking forward to figuring out what I’m going to do next.”

WSDOT provides $32m in mitigation funds, allowing Metro to run some additional bus service in the corridor until construction is complete.

The County provides $190m in capital, plus $15m annually, to add RapidRide and peak express bus service in the corridor; create a Burien-Delridge RapidRide line; “simplify” downtown trolley bus service, and make some transit-related street improvements, all funded by a new 1% MVET. Despite of signing a letter that vowed to “support efforts” for this revenue source, Governor Gregoire jettisons it at the first sign of trouble (three weeks later) and later goes out of her way to veto a much smaller vehicle license fee.

An unfunded commitment to examine the First Avenue Streetcar in the context of the Transit Master Plan.

The who-pays-for-what isn’t as well fleshed out in any document I can find*, but the spending components are:

$30m in construction mitigation.

$476m (plus $55m annually) for:

Transit improvements include more all-day service than the elevated hybrid scenario. This would include increased service on Metro’s RapidRide routes for Ballard/Uptown, Aurora Avenue and West Seattle and new RapidRide routes on Delridge Way and Lake City Way. The waterfront streetcar would be replaced with a new First Avenue line between King Street and Seattle Center. Park and rides would be expanded in Burien, White Center and Shoreline. The Rapid Trolleybus Network would be expanded with new connections such as Madison Park to Colman Dock, Queen Anne to Capitol Hill, and Beacon Hill to Capitol Hill. Moderate investment would be made in other express and local routes in Seattle.

Make of this what you will, but those are the facts.

* It is, interestingly, much easier to find info about unpopular alternatives like the Elliott Bay Bridge or retrofit than live ones like surface/transit or the rebuild. See this for one take from the 2009 Nickels campaign, a take which probably isn’t constitutional.

We reported Wednesday about Sound Transit’s new plans to create a public plaza as part of the Nagle Place extension behind the Capitol Hill light rail station. We have now received a document showing details of the planned layout and can share it with you.

Above is the new design concept for Nagle that Sound Transit has unveiled. Its creates a a southern plaza and a northern section which will be a service and parking entrance. The original Nagle concept floated by Sound Transit last year treated the street as a maintenance route that would be sometimes closed to traffic and repurposed for the market. You can see how they illustrated it previously, below.

The new plan will be discussed at a public forum next Tuesday, August 3rd at the Century Ballroom. One issue raised by many about Tuesday’s meeting is that it’s an awful night for a community meeting with theNight Out 2010 block parties happening around the neighborhood. We asked Sound Transit about the possibility of a reschedule or follow-up meeting. Here’s what spokesperson Jeff Munnoch said about that via the CHS comments:

The Capitol Hill community is very active and there are a variety of public activities and events on almost every night of the week during the busy summer months. Sound Transit attempts to avoid schedule conflicts with agencies and community groups, and unfortunately we cannot always find a time that works for everyone . This meeting was rescheduled once already to avoid a conflict with a another community group event on Wednesday night.

We want to provide everyone in the community a chance to participate and provid feedback. The materials from the meeting, will be available on our website following the meeting. We will also make the materials available here on this site, along with a link to send us in your comments or feedback.

We’ll definitely report on the meeting and gather materials to share here on the site. On one hand, it might be more productive to move meetings like this to online resources more and more. On the other, it doesn’t seem impossible to find a night on Capitol Hill with a lower level of schedule conflict. Meanwhile, a group from the Capitol Hill Community Council is planning a follow-up meeting on Thursday night to discuss the forum at 7 PM at Roy Street Coffee.

If that’s not enough transit wonkery for you, consider spending Saturday morning at the Century Ballroom for a second session introducing the Creative Crossroads Committee to the Hill’s transit oriented development process. The group, backed by King County, the Cascade Land Conservancy and a $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, is holding kick-off sessions to gather support for its effort to work with community groups like the Community Council-Chamber of Commerce Capitol Hill Champion joint effort. If you’re a little confused about how it all fits together, so are we. So we asked.

Alison Van Gorp, urban policy director for the Cascade Land Conservancy, sent CHS the slides embedded below from the presentation the group went through during this week’s first session on the Hill and will walk through again on Saturday. She pointed us specifically at slide 7:

Here is what Van Gorp wrote in her e-mail:

Our effort is pulling together a number of experts who are developing recommendations for the Champion (as well as the City and Sound Transit) on a strategy for creating community cultural space in the light rail redevelopment. We look at our effort as informing the work of the Champion going forward. The Champion will continue to advocate for the community’s vision for the light rail station, including this community cultural space component.

CHS asked Van Gorp about the possibility that Capitol Hill community groups and her organization’s agendas might diverge and make it more difficult to counterbalance Sound Transit’s goals. Van Grop writes that she and others will be “making sure that these two pieces are closely integrated so that we’re all advocating for the same vision and no ‘divisions’ emerge.”

Want to help make that goal a reality? Below are the slides and details of Saturday’s session. If you went to Monday’s meeting, how did it go?

The Leschi Community Council puts on some of the neighborhood’s best events. Their series of concerts at Flo Ware Park last year were terrific.

They’ve got another big one planned for tomorrow in the historic Leschi Park along Lake Washington, with their Leschi Park Arts & Crafts Fair, scheduled from 11am to 6pm.

They’ll have live music from two bands:

Bakra Bata – The leaders of the steel drum band lived just a few blocks from Leschi Park until they were forced out by a SWAT operation. They’re performing for free in Leschi to thank the community for all of the support during the last year. Bakra Bata will perform at noon, and click here for a video of their performance at HONK!

Greenwood Concert Band – The more than 50 musicians in the band reportedly made a big splash at last year’s Leschi Park Centennial celebration. They take the stage at 2:30pm.

The event will also have neighborhood artists and other vendors displaying their work.

It all starts at 11am at the park at 201 Lakeside Avenue.
